Where: The most southern island of Greece!!

Rethymno: Surrounded by the White Mountains and Mount Psiloritis (Ida) is the county of Rethymno, which is a jewel on the island of the Crete, defined by beauty and history. The old district of Rethymno, also the name of the capital, stands out for its unique architecture and a combination of Venetian and Turkish mansions that bewitch visitors with their every step. Built in the 16th century in order to protect residents from pirate invasions, the famous fortress Fortezza adorns the city’s harbor. The archaeological museum’s doors are open, helping visitors journey through the city’s history. The well-known Monastery of Arkadi awaits you 24 kilometers southeast of Rethymno; a symbol of bravery of the Cretans against the Turkish occupiers. For those who love mountains, 79 kilometers southeast of Rethymno, above Mount Psiloritis, is the breathtaking Nida plateau with its trademark, stone-vaulted, pastoral residences, known as “mitata”. Winter escapades and winter sports can be enjoyed at the plateau’s ski resort. Built on a rocky edge, at an altitude of 730 meters, you will encounter the beautiful, graphic village of Anogia. Heraklion: This is the largest and most populated county on the island and has some of the greatest archaeological sites in Greece. The Palaces of Knossos and Phaistos is just one of many sites. Heraklion is also the birthplace of the Minoan civilization, the most ancient civilization of the European continent and one of the greatest civilizations of humanity. This was also the birthplace of one of the greatest artists of all time, El Greco, whose works became a symbol of Renaissance perfection.
In the center of the town, Venizelos Square awaits, surrounded by stores for your shopping sprees and cafes for your relaxation. Standing in command in the harbor is the Venetian castle, which is worth your while to visit. Nearby, in Eleftheria (Freedom) Square, the archaeological museum is a true revelation, as it houses the largest collection of Minoan civilization findings. Two of the most important Minoan palaces in all of Crete lie a few kilometers away from the city; archaeological site of Phaistos is approximately 5 kilometers south of the city, while 65 kilometers southwest of the city, is the impressive Palace of Knossos
Aside from history, outside of the city, one can also enjoy Heraklion’s amazing nature. Located 94 kilometers northeast of the Agios Nikolaos, it is the only palm forest in Europe with over 5,000 palm trees, in an area of approximately 250 hectares. Last, don’t miss out on the opportunity to have fun in a traditional Cretan festival. where dancing to the accompaniment of the lyra and feasting on exquisite Lasithian cuisine take central stage. An example of such a festival is that of Agios Antonios on January 17, in the village of Zakros, on the eastside of the county.

International survey about the image of Greece launched...

A group of researchers from Greece and the United States have launched an international survey about the international image of Greece as a tourist destination.

The survey is part of a rebranding exercise of Greece in light of the country's present economic and social crisis. Hundreds of thousands of Greek families depend on tourism for their livelihood and it is of utmost importance for the country to remain competitive in the international tourism market.

The survey findings will help in formulating and proposing the proper branding strategy for Greece under the present extremely difficult conditions. The survey is aimed at non-Greeks as well as at Greeks living abroad.

The researchers, headed by Prof. Sotiris Hji-Avgoustis of Indiana University, are inviting people – and especially tourism professionals – from around the world to fill in the survey’s questionnaire. The completion of the questionnaire will require about 12 to 15 minutes.

The best beach on the southwest of Crete!!

Crete, Greece....

Plakias is 35 kilometres south of Rethymno, on the southern coast of Crete on the Libyan Sea and is a popular tourist resort well-known for its award-winning Blue Flag sandy beach stretching for 1400 metres.
    The eastern part of the long beach is called Paligremnos. The beach is sandy and very well organized, next to hotels and restaurants. Characteristic of Paligremnos are nearby huge vertical cliffs that rise to a great height. There are caves, dug by Wehrmacht during the German Occupation. Moreover, this place is called Gonates (i.e. knees), because according to tradition, the epic hero Digenis kneeled there to drink water from a local spring.
  Lastly, in Paligremnos a strange phenomenon takes place on every full moon, from September to January. The moonlight is reflected in the mirror-like towering cliffs. Thus, many big squids approach the beach and locals gather them with big sticks.(MAP)

Νότιο Ρέθυμνο: Ατενίζοντας το Λιβυκό...

Στη νότια ακτογραμμή του νομού Ρεθύμνου, στη σκιά του Ψηλορείτη, το βαθύ μπλε του πελάγους στήνει το δικό του σκηνικό με πανέμορφες παραλίες που εναλλάσσονται στα μάτια του ταξιδιώτη
ΚΕΙΜΕΝΟ, ΦΩΤΟΓΡΑΦΙΕΣ: ΝΙΚΟΣ ΛΟΥΠΑΚΗΣ (Άρθρο από εφημερίδα καθημερινή)
Οι ορεινοί όγκοι που αποτελούν τη ραχοκοκαλιά της Κρήτης -και φυσικά δίνουν το «παρών» και στο νομό Ρεθύμνου- καθορίζουν όχι μόνο την άγρια ομορφιά του μεγαλύτερου νησιού της Ελλάδας, αλλά και τις ιδιαιτερότητες της επικοινωνίας μεταξύ της βόρειας και νότιας ακτής του. Αναπόφευκτα, το οδικό δίκτυο βρίσκεται αρκετές φορές αγκαλιά με κάποιο γκρεμό ή ερωτοτροπεί με κάποιο φαράγγι, αλλά οι εξαιρετικές παραλίες του Λιβυκού πελάγους αποτελούν την ανταμοιβή για τον κουρασμένο ταξιδιώτη. Στην περίπτωσή μας ανακαλύπτουμε -για άλλη μια φορά- τις ομορφιές της ακτογραμμής που συνδέει την κοσμοπολίτικη -αλλά πάντα «κουκλίστικη»- Αγία Γαλήνη με τη φημισμένη Μονή Πρέβελη, την παραλία του Φοίνικα και τον Πλακιά. Η τραγική ειρωνεία αυτής της ιστορίας είναι ότι προλάβαμε να δούμε από κοντά το εξαιρετικής ομορφιάς φοινικόδασος στη διεθνώς γνωστή παραλία του Φοίνικα, κάτω από τη Μονή Πρέβελη, λίγο πριν καταστραφεί από τη φωτιά κι ενώ το αφιέρωμα που διαβάζετε είχε πάρει το δρόμο για το τυπογραφείο.
ΑΓΙΑ ΓΑΛΗΝΗ
Αρκεί να βρεθείς έστω και μία φορά στην Αγία Γαλήνη για να συγκρατήσεις τη μοναδική εικόνα που προσφέρουν τα σκαρφαλωμένα στο βράχο -παντός είδους- λευκά οικοδομήματα από τη μια και το μικρό λιμανάκι με τα ψαροκάικα από την άλλη. Σωστή ζωγραφιά, με σαφώς νησιώτικες επιρροές - και είναι αυτό ακριβώς το στοιχείο που έκανε το κάποτε ανύπαρκτο αυτό χωριό διάσημο σε όλο τον κόσμο. Η διασημότητα έφερε βεβαίως τη σχετική τουριστική κίνηση, η Αγ. Γαλήνη έχει πλέον το στοιχείο του κοσμοπολιτισμού διάχυτο στα σοκάκια της, αλλά όμορφη δεν έπαψε να είναι. Και αν είσαι τυχερός να μπλεχτείς με κάποια παρέα ντόπιων, θα ανακαλύψεις την αυθεντικότητα της Κρήτης πίνοντας ρακή και ακούγοντας να απαγγέλλουν κάποια μαντινάδα:
«Πήρε ο βοριάς τα ρούχα μου, Κι ο νότος τ' άρματά μου, Και μια βαθιά μελαχρινή, Μου πήρε την καρδιά μου.»
Θέλοντας και μη, λοιπόν, η Αγία Γαλήνη (που διεκδικεί μάλιστα την «πατρότητα» του Δαίδαλου και του Ικαρου) αποτελεί σημείο αναφοράς για όλη τη νότια ακτή του νομού Ρεθύμνου. Παρόλο που οι δυνατότητες για εκδρομικές εξορμήσεις δεν αφορούν μόνο τη θάλασσα, αλλά και το βουνό. Η ανάβαση στα περίπου 600 μέτρα όπου μας περιμένουν οι Μέλαμπες επιβάλλεται για δύο λόγους: ο ένας είναι η εκπληκτική θέα προς τον Ψηλορείτη, ο άλλος είναι η αυθεντικότητα του χωριού που στέκει μακριά από τον τουρισμό. Εξάλλου οι Μέλαμπες «γέννησαν» την Αγία Γαλήνη: από εδώ κατέβηκαν οι πρώτες οικογένειες που έβαλαν τα θεμέλια του όμορφου οικισμού.
ΚΟΥΡΤΑΛΙΩΤΙΚΟ ΦΑΡΑΓΓΙ - ΠΛΑΚΙΑΣ
Οι πανέμορφες παραλίες που εναλλάσσονται κατά μήκος της «Λιβυκής» ακτογραμμής, δυτικά της Αγίας Γαλήνης, είναι ό,τι καλύτερο έχει να σου προσφέρει ο Νότος του Ρεθύμνου το καλοκαίρι. Ξεκινώντας από τη μικρή, απόμερη παραλία του Αγ. Γεωργίου, περίπου πέντε χιλιόμετρα από την Αγ. Γαλήνη, και καταλήγοντας στην τεράστια παραλία του Πλακιά και ακόμα πιο πέρα, στην παραλία του Κόρακα, στο Ροδάκινο.
Ο δρόμος που οδηγεί στο άλλο άκρο του άξονα της εξερεύνησής μας αποχαιρετά τη θάλασσα έχοντας για φόντο τον Ψηλορείτη και ελίσσεται στη συνέχεια μεταξύ των ορέων Κέδρος και Σιδερώτας προσφέροντας χαρακτηριστικές εικόνες του κρητικού τοπίου, με τις ελιές και τις γυμνές βουνοκορφές να δίνουν το στίγμα της μεγαλονήσου. Κομβικό σημείο το Σπήλι, 24 χιλιόμετρα από την Αγ. Γαλήνη και 26 από το Ρέθυμνο, φημίζεται για τα νερά που τρέχουν από τις λεοντόμορφες κρήνες στην πλατεία με τα πλατάνια και, αν κινείσαι σε χαλαρούς ρυθμούς, δεν θα πεις όχι σε μια στάση για ένα δροσιστικό καφεδάκι και μια βόλτα στα γραφικά σοκάκια του.
Λίγο μετά, σειρά έχει το επιβλητικό Κουρταλιώτικο φαράγγι, που είναι ό,τι πιο όμορφο υπάρχει στη διαδρομή μέχρι την Πρέβελη και τον Πλακιά. Οι πανύψηλοι βράχοι προκαλούν δέος και η στάση στο πλάτωμα, αμέσως μετά το στενό πέρασμα, επιβεβλημένη. Είτε έχεις σκοπό να φωτογραφίσεις είτε απλώς να απολαύσεις τις μοναδικές εικόνες. Μόνο που καλό είναι να έχεις υπόψη σου ότι εδώ ο αέρας χτυπάει... κούρταλα (παλαμάκια). Οταν φυσάει, δεν αστειεύεται. βλέπεις να κουνιούνται και οι πέτρες στην άσφαλτο!
Ο γραφικός Ασώματος μας περιμένει μετά την έξοδο του φαραγγιού για να αποφασίσουμε αν θα τραβήξουμε προς Λευκόγεια και Πλακιά ή αν θα ανηφορίσουμε προς τη φημισμένη Πρέβελη. Στην πρώτη περίπτωση, στη διαδρομή μας θα συναντήσουμε τις ταμπέλες που δείχνουν προς Δαμνόνι και άλλες σχετικά μικρές αλλά όμορφες παραλίες.
Επίσης όμορφη, αλλά ασύγκριτα μεγαλύτερη σε μήκος, είναι και η παραλία του Πλακιά. Το μικρό ψαροχώρι της δεκαετίας του '70 με τα ελάχιστα σπίτια και τα ακόμα πιο λίγα ενοικιαζόμενα δωμάτια έχει εξελιχθεί σε πολυσύχναστο παραθεριστικό θέρετρο, αλλά -ευτυχώς- το μέγεθος της παραλίας έχει την ικανότητα να απορροφάει το πλήθος που έρχεται εδώ να απολαύσει τα διάφανα, πεντακάθαρα νερά του Λιβυκού.
ΠΡΕΒΕΛΗ
Η διάσημη Πρέβελη θεωρητικά δεν χρειάζεται συστάσεις, είναι από τα αξιοθέατα του Ρεθύμνου που απλώς δεν γίνεται να μην επισκεφθείς. Ωστόσο η διευκρίνιση απαραίτητη: όταν λέμε Πρέβελη, δεν εννοούμε μόνο την περίφημη παραλία του Φοίνικα (που ελάχιστοι γνωρίζουν ότι ονομάζεται έτσι), αλλά και τη Μονή Πίσω Πρέβελη, που αποτελεί το ιστορικό αξιοθέατο της περιοχής. Το όμορφα ανακαινισμένο μοναστήρι ιδρύθηκε μεταξύ 16ου και 17ου αιώνα (άγνωστο πότε ακριβώς, καθώς από τις λεηλασίες πολλά έγγραφα και κειμήλια χάθηκαν ή καταστράφηκαν). Η απαραίτητη επίσκεψη στο μουσείο μάς αποκαλύπτει την ιστορία του: Επί Τουρκοκρατίας υπήρξε άλλοτε καταφύγιο και άλλοτε ορμητήριο των κατά καιρούς εξεγερμένων, ενώ κατά τον Β' Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο βοήθησε στην αποχώρηση των συμμαχικών στρατευμάτων που υπεράσπιζαν την Κρήτη.
Κάτω στην παραλία τώρα, η κατάσταση έχει αλλάξει. Εκεί ο Κουρταλιώτης ποταμός και οι φοίνικες έστηναν -μέχρι πριν από λίγες εβδομάδες- ένα σκηνικό που θύμιζε βόρεια Αφρική. Το φοινικόδασος όμως βρέθηκε ανυπεράσπιστο στην πυρκαγιά και η μαυρίλα που πήρε τη θέση του θα μαυρίσει την καρδιά σας. Τα αισιόδοξα σενάρια κάνουν λόγο για κάποια αποκατάσταση -φυσική αναγέννηση- σε καμιά διετία. Μπορούμε να ελπίζουμε.
Πάντως, έχετε υπόψη σας ότι οι επιλογές για την προσέγγιση της παραλίας είναι δύο: λίγος χωματόδρομος και πολύ περπάτημα με απότομη κατάβαση ή πολύς (6 χλμ.) και «κακός» χωματόδρομος μέχρι τη διπλανή παραλία (Αμμούδι) και λίγο (σε σαφώς ευκολότερες συνθήκες) περπάτημα. Στην πρώτη περίπτωση, πάντως, αυτήν που παρκάρεις το αυτοκίνητο λίγο πιο κάτω από τη Μονή, η θέα κατά την κατάβαση είναι σαφώς πιο εντυπωσιακή. Αν επιλέξεις τη δεύτερη λύση, θα πρέπει να ακολουθήσεις το χωματόδρομο που ξεκινά από τη διασταύρωση με το πέτρινο γεφύρι, λίγο μετά την ερειπωμένη Μονή Αγίου Ιωάννου Προδρόμου (Κάτω Πρέβελη).
ΑΓΙΟΣ ΠΑΥΛΟΣ
Το μυστικό που δεν θα βρεις στους χάρτες, αλλά θα ανακαλύψεις μόνο αν ρωτήσεις, είναι ότι από το Αμμούδι, δίπλα στην παραλία του Φοίνικα, ξεκινά ένας γενικά βατός χωματόδρομος που σου επιτρέπει να φτάσεις μέχρι τον Αγιο Παύλο, πολύ πιο γρήγορα απ' ό,τι αν ξαναγύριζες από το Σπήλι για να κινηθείς στην άσφαλτο. Στη διαδρομή αυτή απολαμβάνεις το Λιβυκό σε όλο του το μεγαλείο. Μικρές και μεγάλες παραλίες εναλλάσσονται, πάντα στη σκιά του Σιδερώτα, στα δεξιά σου: Αγ. Ειρήνη, Αγ. Φωτεινή, Λίγκρες - τα ονόματα δεν έχουν σημασία, βλέπεις, διαλέγεις και παίρνεις!
Κάποια στιγμή καταλαβαίνεις ότι έφτασες στην Τριόπετρα, καθώς βρίσκεσαι αντιμέτωπος με τους τρεις χαρακτηριστικούς βράχους - σύμβολο της μεγάλης παραλίας. Ομως το καλύτερο, το διαφορετικό ακολουθεί αμέσως μετά. Ο λόγος για τον Αγιο Παύλο. Εδώ τη διαφορά την κάνουν οι περίφημοι αμμόλοφοι που ορθώνονται σαν τείχος πάνω από την τεράστια παραλία, αποτελώντας ταυτόχρονα πρόκληση για τη φυσική σου κατάσταση.
Κάπου εδώ ολοκληρώνεται η εναλλαγή των τόσο διαφορετικών εικόνων που προσφέρει η περιοχή. Από το ποτάμι με τους φοίνικες στους αμμόλοφους και από τα πολύβουα θέρετρα στις ερημικές παραλίες, στους ανέγγιχτους από τον τουρισμό οικισμούς. Δύσκολο να φύγεις ανικανοποίητος, ό,τι και αν έχεις ζητήσει...
Η ΟΜΟΡΦΙΑ ΠΟΥ ΧΑΣΑΜΕ
Οι αστροφυσικοί λένε ότι πολλά από τα αστέρια που βλέπουμε στον ουρανό δεν υπάρχουν πια. Οχι επειδή πρόκειται για οφθαλμαπάτη, αλλά γιατί ο χρόνος που χρειάζεται για να φτάσει το φως τους στη Γη είναι τόσο μεγάλος, που στο μεταξύ αυτά έχουν ήδη σβήσει… Το δάσος της παραλίας του Φοίνικα, το φοινικόδασος Πρέβελη, όπως είναι ευρύτερα γνωστό, επίσης δεν υπάρχει πια. Και δεν πέρασαν εκατομμύρια χρόνια από τότε που το είδαμε τελευταία φορά. Ούτε μήνας σωστός δεν πέρασε από τότε που τραβήχτηκε η φωτογραφία που βλέπετε επάνω.
Η Πρέβελη έσβησε και τώρα έρχεται η ώρα των θλιμμένων αναλύσεων των ειδικών και των οργισμένων ρεπορτάζ των συναδέλφων δημοσιογράφων. Η πατρίδα μου η Κρήτη -και μαζί της όλη η Ελλάδα- χάνει ένα μοναδικό στολίδι της, γιατί κανείς δεν σκέφτηκε να το προστατεύσει. Ενώ αντιθέτως πολλοί σκέφτηκαν να το ξεζουμίσουν, εγκαθιστώντας ομπρελοξαπλώστρες στην παραλία και βάζοντας ποδήλατα να αρμενίζουν στο ποτάμι... Θαυμάστε τη χαμένη ομορφιά και θυμώστε για το «μπαλάκι» που τώρα θα πηγαίνει από τον ένα στον άλλο, χωρίς κανείς να τιμωρηθεί και χωρίς κανείς να μπορεί να δώσει μια απλή απάντηση στο απλό ερώτημα: γιατί δεν διατέθηκαν -εγκαίρως- δύο, τρεις, τέσσερις, δέκα χιλιάδες ευρώ για να υπάρχει σε μόνιμη βάση εκεί μια βενζινοκίνητη αντλία που θα έπαιρνε νερό από το ποτάμι και θα έσβηνε αμέσως τη φωτιά, στο ξεκίνημά της;

ΠΩΣ ΠΑΜΕ
Τα νότια παράλια του νομού Ρεθύμνου μπορείτε να τα προσεγγίσετε με Ι.Χ. αυτοκίνητο με το οποίο θα έρθετε είτε από Ρέθυμνο (Ρέθυμνο-Πλακιάς: 36 χλμ./45-55 λεπτά, Ρέθυμνο - Αγ. Γαλήνη: 55 χλμ./ 1 ώρα), είτε από Χανιά (Ρέθυμνο-Χανιά: 59 χλμ./45 λεπτά), είτε από Ηράκλειο (Ηράκλειο-Αγ. Γαλήνη: 78 χλμ./1,5 ώρα). Χανιά και Ηράκλειο συνδέονται ακτοπλοϊκώς καθημερινά με τον Πειραιά (Blue Star Ferries Τ/18130 & 210-89.19.800, ΑΝΕΚ Τ/210 41.97.400, Minoan Lines Τ/18175 & 210-41.45.700). Για Χανιά και Ηράκλειο υπάρχουν επίσης καθημερινά αρκετές πτήσεις από Αθήνα και Θεσσαλονίκη (Aegean Τ/801 11 20000 & 210-62.61.000, Olympic Air Τ/801 801 01 01 & 210-35.50.500). Το Ηράκλειο συνδέεται επίσης αεροπορικώς με Κέρκυρα, Σαντορίνη, Μύκονο και Σάμο (Sky Express Τ/2810-223.500).
Επίσης, Αγ. Γαλήνη, Πρέβελη και Πλακιάς συνδέονται καθημερινά με το Ρέθυμνο με δρομολόγια του ΚΤΕΛ Χανίων-Ρεθύμνου (Τ/28310-22.212). Η Αγ. Γαλήνη συνδέεται επίσης και με το Ηράκλειο (Τ/ΚΤΕΛ Ηρακλείου-Λασιθίου 2810-246.530).

Beach of Preveli... Rethymno Crete!!

   Preveli is located about 35km south of Rethymno and 10km east of Plakias. Beach of Preveli, also known as Lake Preveli or Phoenix, is located at the exit of the imposing Kourtaliotikos Gorge, where the Great River (Megas Potamos) is flowing. 

 It is certainly the most famous beach in southern Crete, accepting thousands of visitors every summer.
During the 60s and 70s, it was a favorite destination for hippies.
On the banks of the Grand River there is a large colony of Theophrastus palm trees, which give the region a sense of an African landscape.
The river, forming a large lake, 1.5km long, before emptying into the sea, has water all year round.
You can walk along the river, under the shade of palm trees and other trees, and start ascending in the beautiful canyon.
You can swim in the cold ponds formed in the gorge.
A big fire in 2010 burnt almost everything of this paradise, but paradoxically the palmgrove recovered most of its damage.

   At the exit of the river, a sandy beach with pebbles and sand is formed, with sea water being very cool due to the river. In the eastern part of the beach, there is a beautiful rock reminding of a mast. 
  This landscape, characterized as one of the most beautiful in Europe, seems to have attracted homo erectus who might used to swim here, before 130,000 years...
